President William Ruto has intensified efforts to consolidate support in Western Kenya by unveiling a series of development projects while his allies rallied behind Cooperatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya as a potential running mate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The renewed political activity comes as both the Kenya Kwanza administration and the opposition compete for influence in the vote-rich region, which is expected to play a decisive role in the next presidential election.
Speaking during the enthronement of Bishop Vitalis Job Ekuru of the Anglican Church of Kenya’s Katakwa Diocese in Busia County on Sunday, President Ruto outlined key infrastructure projects his administration says are transforming livelihoods across Western Kenya.
Ruto lists development projects
The President said the government had prioritised investments in roads, electricity, water, agriculture and other public infrastructure to accelerate economic growth in the region.
He maintained that the projects demonstrate his administration’s commitment to equitable development and improving access to essential services for residents.
Ruto urged leaders to support the government’s development agenda, saying continued investment would create jobs, improve trade and strengthen local economies.
Oparanya backed for deputy president
During the event, several Kenya Kwanza leaders publicly endorsed Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya as the coalition’s preferred deputy presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
The endorsement signals growing efforts by the ruling coalition to strengthen its political foothold in Western Kenya by courting influential regional leaders.
Although Oparanya has not publicly declared interest in the position, the calls by Ruto’s allies have intensified speculation about his possible role in the coalition’s future political plans.
