The government has expressed confidence in the level of preparedness for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, set to be held in Wajir County, as key infrastructure and logistical arrangements near completion.
Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in the county, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr Raymond Omollo said preparations were progressing well and remained on schedule ahead of the June 1 national event.
Omollo, who was accompanied by Defence Principal Secretary Dr Patrick Mariru and officials from various government agencies, commended the strong coordination between the national and county governments in delivering the project.

The delegation was received by Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and his deputy Ahmed Abdi, alongside other county leaders, with both levels of government working jointly to ensure the success of the celebrations.
“This will be a historic moment for the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region. As a government, we are taking national celebrations to all parts of the country so that every region is part of the national development agenda,” Omollo said.
The designation of Wajir as the host marks the first time Madaraka Day celebrations will be held in Northern Kenya.
An assessment of key sites showed that construction of the main stadium is between 65 and 70 per cent complete, with contractors expected to finish ahead of schedule. Road upgrades within Wajir town and along major access routes are also ongoing to improve accessibility.
Other projects include the refurbishment of the County Commissioner’s residence, which will host the official State luncheon, as well as improvements in water supply through borehole drilling and expanded distribution systems.
Electricity supply has also been stabilised through the installation of generators, ensuring reliable power during the celebrations.
Omollo said all critical components were being closely monitored to guarantee smooth execution of the national event.
“We are encouraged by the progress made so far. From the stadium to roads, water and power, all key infrastructure is on course, and we are confident that Wajir will be ready ahead of time,” he said.
The government also announced that exhibitions and public engagement activities will be held in the lead-up to the celebrations, in line with this year’s theme, “Education, Skills, and the Future.”
Officials say the move to host the event in Wajir underscores efforts to promote inclusivity and ensure national celebrations reflect the diversity of the country.
