WhatsApp rolls out usernames to strengthen user privacy

Date:

WhatsApp is introducing a long-awaited username feature that will allow users to chat without revealing their mobile phone numbers, marking one of the platform’s biggest privacy upgrades in recent years.

The messaging platform announced that users will begin reserving unique usernames this week ahead of a wider rollout expected later in 2026. The feature will be introduced gradually, with users receiving notifications once it becomes available in their region.

The move shifts WhatsApp closer to other social messaging platforms by allowing people to identify and contact one another through usernames instead of phone numbers.

Username reservations begin

Meta said users will be able to reserve a unique username after updating to the latest version of WhatsApp.

The option will be available through the Account section in the app’s settings, while iPhone users can also create a username directly from their profile page.

Each username must be unique and can contain between three and 35 characters. To simplify the process, WhatsApp is introducing a username suggestion tool that recommends available options if a preferred name has already been taken.

Although reservations are beginning now, Meta indicated that the feature will become available to users in phases over the coming months.

Privacy takes centre stage

The introduction of usernames is designed to improve user privacy, particularly when communicating with people or businesses for the first time.

Instead of displaying a personal phone number, WhatsApp will allow users who opt into the feature to share only their username during new conversations.

The company said it will not create a public directory of usernames. Instead, users will need to know someone’s exact username before initiating contact, a measure intended to reduce unsolicited messages and enhance protection against online scams.

WhatsApp is also developing an optional username key that will provide users with additional control over who can reach them on the platform.

Businesses and creators to benefit

The feature is also expected to support businesses, content creators and public organisations by enabling them to maintain a consistent identity across Meta’s ecosystem.

Eligible users will be able to reserve usernames that match their existing Facebook or Instagram accounts, making it easier for customers and followers to recognise official profiles.

To minimise impersonation, Meta has already secured usernames belonging to prominent public figures, celebrities and major organisations before the public rollout begins.

Phone numbers will still be required

Despite the new functionality, WhatsApp clarified that phone numbers will continue to be required when creating an account.

Existing contacts who already have a user’s phone number will continue communicating as usual, while usernames simply provide an additional option for connecting with new contacts without disclosing personal information.

With more than three billion users worldwide, WhatsApp says the early reservation period is intended to give users a fair opportunity to claim their preferred usernames before the feature becomes widely available.
