The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has unveiled a fresh round of infrastructure, commercial and operational projects targeting key airports across the country as the government accelerates efforts to modernise the aviation sector.
The projects, outlined in newly published tender notices, will be implemented at Moi International Airport in Mombasa, Wilson Airport in Nairobi, Malindi Airport and several regional airstrips.
Malindi Airport Set for New Fuel Facility
At Malindi Airport, KAA is seeking an investor to develop and operate an aviation fuel uplift facility aimed at improving fuel availability and supporting growing aircraft movements in the coastal tourism hub.
The planned facility is expected to enhance operational efficiency for airlines and private operators while strengthening the airport’s capacity to serve increasing passenger and cargo traffic.
Moi Airport to Get Passenger Lounge and Safety Upgrades
In Mombasa, KAA has re-advertised a tender for the development and management of a passenger lounge at the domestic departures terminal of Moi International Airport.
The authority is also looking for consultancy services to design, review and supervise ground and slope stabilisation works at the airport.
The project is intended to improve safety standards and protect critical infrastructure at Kenya’s second-busiest international airport, which handles thousands of domestic and international travellers annually.
Wilson Airport Water Supply Project
Wilson Airport is among the facilities earmarked for infrastructure improvements through a new borehole drilling project and the installation of water reticulation systems.
The works will connect above-ground storage tanks and firefighting reservoirs, enhancing water availability and strengthening emergency response preparedness at the busy domestic airport.
KAA said the project is part of broader efforts to improve operational efficiency and safety standards at the facility.
Regional Airstrips Also Targeted
Beyond the major airports, KAA has announced plans to improve services at several regional air facilities.
The authority has invited bids for cleaning, environmental management and fumigation services at Migori Airstrip.
It has also re-advertised a tender for the development and management of a commercial shopping complex at Boma Airstrip, a project expected to boost revenue generation while improving services for travellers and local communities.
Government Pushes Aviation Modernisation
The latest developments come amid a wider government programme aimed at upgrading airport infrastructure and positioning Kenya as a leading aviation and logistics hub in East Africa.
The announcement follows recent confirmation by Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir that the long-awaited expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is expected to begin this month after the commencement of the international procurement process.
Government officials say the ongoing investments are designed to improve passenger experience, enhance safety, attract private sector participation and support the continued growth of Kenya’s aviation industry.
