Ruto commissions Sh3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover to ease Nairobi traffic

Date:

President William Ruto on Monday officially commissioned the Sh3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover, describing the project as a major investment aimed at improving mobility, boosting economic productivity and positioning Nairobi as a modern, globally competitive city.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, President Ruto said the newly completed 800-metre elevated dual carriageway will significantly reduce traffic congestion along one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors, improving travel between Ngong Road, Naivasha Road and the Central Business District (CBD).

“This Sh3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover is a strategic investment in the efficiency, productivity and competitiveness of our capital city,” the President said.

Ruto noted that persistent traffic congestion has for years slowed business operations, increased transport costs and reduced productivity by forcing commuters to spend long hours on the road.

“For far too long, traffic congestion has placed a heavy burden on our economy and on the daily lives of Kenyans. Every minute spent in traffic is time that could have been invested in productive work, business and economic growth,” he said.

Investment in modern infrastructure

The Head of State said the government remains committed to expanding and modernising the country’s transport infrastructure to support rapid urbanisation and create an environment that attracts local and foreign investment.

“We will continue investing in infrastructure that supports economic growth, creates opportunities and prepares Nairobi for the demands of a rapidly expanding economy. Our goal is to build a city that is efficient, well-connected and globally competitive,” Ruto said.

The flyover, implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), separates through traffic along Ngong Road from vehicles accessing Naivasha Road and King’ara Road, a move expected to ease congestion at one of the capital’s busiest intersections.

Improved access to Talanta Stadium

President Ruto said the project will also improve access to major public facilities, including the Talanta Stadium, which is under construction ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He noted that improved road infrastructure will be critical in supporting the movement of fans, athletes, visitors and businesses during the continental tournament and beyond.

“Our infrastructure investments are not only addressing today’s transport challenges but are also preparing Kenya to successfully host major international events while supporting long-term economic transformation,” the President said.

The government expects the new flyover to reduce travel time, improve road safety, lower transport costs and enhance connectivity across western Nairobi, contributing to increased productivity and improved quality of life for thousands of daily commuters.
