The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Central Committee has outlined a series of resolutions aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots presence, addressing national concerns, and preparing for upcoming political activities.
Key highlights from the meeting
The meeting, held on April 16, 2026, was chaired by party leader Oburu Oginga and marked the second Central Committee sitting this year, following an earlier session in January.
Party officials reviewed internal progress, including the successful National Delegates Convention held on March 27 at the ASK Showgrounds. The event was praised for its smooth organization and lack of incidents, with the National Secretariat and organizing team receiving commendation.
The Committee also lauded the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) for overseeing largely peaceful and transparent grassroots elections across the country. The exercise is currently 98 percent complete.
ODM to launch nationwide Youth Conventions
In a move targeting youth engagement, ODM announced plans to hold conventions in 25 counties.
- Nairobi County will host the first convention on April 20
- Mombasa County follows on April 26
- A break is scheduled between May 1 and May 3 for a joint retreat involving the National Executive Committee, Parliamentary Group, and governors
The party said the conventions are part of a broader strategy to energize its base and expand its influence nationwide.
Push to strengthen grassroots structures
The Central Committee resolved to intensify efforts to popularize the party and strengthen its structures, particularly in traditional strongholds. Members in regions where grassroots elections remain incomplete have been urged to resolve disputes through internal party mechanisms.
Additionally, ODM assured members of free and fair nominations, emphasizing that no candidate will receive preferential treatment. A nominations portal for elective positions is expected to be launched soon.
Concerns over political tensions and cost of living
On inter-party relations, ODM raised concerns about recent public statements from officials affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), calling for mutual respect among political players.
The Committee also addressed broader national issues, including the rising cost of living. It specifically highlighted increasing fuel prices and urged the government to take urgent measures to cushion citizens.
ODM acknowledged ongoing efforts to compensate victims of police brutality and called on the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights to expedite the process.
