Kenya Meteorological Department warns of intensifying rains across several regions

Date:

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh heavy rainfall advisory warning that intensified rains will affect multiple parts of the country between April 22 and April 27, 2026.

In the update—Advisory No. 4 of 2026 (Update No. 1)—the department cautions that rainfall is expected to increase in intensity, with some areas likely to record more than 20 millimetres within a 24-hour period.

Areas Expected to Be Most Affected

According to the forecast, the heaviest rainfall will be experienced in the coastal region, northeastern Kenya, and parts of the southeastern lowlands. Counties likely to be affected include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Garissa.

The advisory also highlights parts of Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui and Makueni as areas that could experience significant rainfall.

Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected

Beyond rainfall, the department warns that the weather system may be accompanied by gusty winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second). This could increase the risk of damage to structures, especially in exposed areas.

A marine advisory has also been issued, indicating that sea waves along the Kenyan coast may rise above 2 metres. This presents potential risks for fishing activities, small vessels, and coastal communities.

Flooding and Visibility Risks

Residents in the affected regions have been urged to remain alert for possible flooding and flash floods, particularly in low-lying and downstream areas. The department notes that floods can occur even in places where rainfall may not appear heavy, due to water flowing from upstream regions.

Reduced visibility during heavy rains is also expected, posing risks for motorists and pedestrians.

Safety Measures for the Public

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued several safety guidelines to help residents stay safe during this period. Members of the public are advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water, as this can be extremely dangerous even at shallow depths.

People are also cautioned against sheltering under trees or near metallic and grilled structures during storms due to the risk of lightning strikes. Those engaging in marine or coastal activities are advised to exercise extra caution given the expected rough sea conditions.

Stay Updated

Authorities are encouraging the public to follow official communication channels for timely updates as weather conditions evolve. Regular updates will be issued in case of any changes to the forecast.

With the rains expected to intensify over the coming days, early preparation and adherence to safety advisories will be critical in reducing risks and protecting lives and property across the affected regions.
