Tharaka Nithi hits 99% voter registration target in ECVR drive

Date:

Tharaka Nithi County has recorded an impressive performance in the recently concluded Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise, achieving 99.34 per cent of its overall target.

According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the county registered 26,256 new voters out of a projected 26,450 during the month-long exercise, reflecting strong public participation across the region.

Strong Performance Across Constituencies

Speaking in Chuka, County IEBC Coordinator Mohammed Raka described the outcome as a major success, attributing it to effective mobilization and increased civic awareness among residents.

“We have performed very well, attaining 99.34 per cent of our target, which reflects a strong response from residents,” said Raka.

Chuka Igambang’ombe Constituency emerged as the top performer, surpassing its target by a wide margin after registering 12,338 voters against a target of 9,653—an achievement rate of 127 per cent.

Tharaka Constituency also exceeded expectations, recording 9,111 new voters compared to its target of 8,442, representing 108 per cent performance.

However, Maara Constituency fell short of its target, registering 4,807 voters against a projected 8,355, translating to 57.5 per cent.

Continuous Registration Still Ongoing

Despite the conclusion of the ECVR exercise, Raka clarified that voter registration has not stopped. Eligible Kenyans can still register at IEBC constituency offices during regular working hours.

He added that services are also available at Huduma Centres within the county, including Chuka, Kathwana, Marimanti and Maara, making access to registration more convenient for residents.

Growing Voter Base

The latest exercise has significantly boosted the county’s voter register, which has grown from 232,000 voters in 2022 to 258,250 currently, indicating steady progress in voter enrolment.

On voter mobility, the commission has so far received 906 applications for voter transfers, which are currently under review.

Raka urged those who are yet to register to take advantage of the ongoing continuous registration process, emphasizing the importance of participating in the democratic process ahead of future elections.
