Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is set to launch a new multi-biometric identification system at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters as part of the government’s drive to modernise policing and strengthen forensic investigations.
Murkomen will also preside over the presentation of an international accreditation certificate to the DCI’s Forensic Evidence Management Unit (FEMU), marking a significant milestone in enhancing forensic standards in Kenya.
DCI forensic unit earns global accreditation
The DCI’s Forensic Evidence Management Unit will receive accreditation from the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB), recognising its compliance with internationally accepted forensic evidence management standards.
According to the Interior Ministry, the certification is expected to strengthen the credibility and reliability of forensic evidence used in criminal investigations.
The accreditation also reinforces the government’s efforts to improve investigative capacity through internationally recognised best practices.
New biometric system to enhance investigations
During the event, Murkomen will officially launch the Multi-Biometric Identification System (MBIS – ABIS Version 5), a technology designed to improve biometric identification and support forensic investigations.
“We will also launch the Multi-Biometric Identification System (MBIS – ABIS Version 5). This is an important milestone in our police modernisation programme,” Murkomen said.
The system is expected to enhance the DCI’s ability to identify individuals more efficiently while supporting criminal investigations through advanced biometric technology.
Government pushes police modernisation
The accreditation and rollout of the new biometric platform form part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise the National Police Service through technology-driven policing.
The Interior Ministry said the initiative will strengthen forensic investigations, improve evidence management and enhance the use of digital technologies in law enforcement.
Officials expect the new capabilities to improve crime detection, speed up investigations and reinforce confidence in forensic evidence used within the criminal justice system.
