The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast showers and thunderstorms in several parts of the country over the coming days, with residents in five regions advised to prepare for changing weather conditions.
In its weekly forecast released on Tuesday, the weather agency said rainfall is expected across the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, and the Coastal region.
While many parts of Kenya will continue experiencing generally dry conditions, the department warned that some areas could receive intermittent rainfall accompanied by cloudy skies and occasional thunderstorms.
Morning rain and afternoon thunderstorms expected
According to the forecast, counties in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and sections of the Rift Valley are likely to experience light morning rains on several days during the week.
The weather is expected to transition into afternoon showers and isolated thunderstorms before giving way to partly cloudy nights, although a few places could still receive evening showers.
Residents in these regions have been advised to monitor weather updates, particularly those involved in farming and outdoor activities.
Nairobi and neighbouring counties to experience showers
The department also projected variable weather conditions in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes Nairobi, Kiambu and surrounding counties.
Cloudy mornings with occasional rainfall are expected before sunny intervals develop later in the day. However, afternoon and evening showers are still likely in some areas throughout the forecast period.
Coast to alternate between sunshine and showers
Along the Coast, residents should expect predominantly sunny conditions during the day, interrupted by isolated morning and afternoon showers in some locations.
Night-time conditions are forecast to remain partly cloudy, with light rainfall possible in a few areas.
Cold nights and high daytime temperatures
Beyond the rainfall outlook, the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of continued cool and cloudy conditions in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Southeastern Lowlands, sections of the Rift Valley, and parts of North Eastern Kenya.
Night-time temperatures in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and areas surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro are expected to fall below 10°C, creating chilly conditions during the early morning and overnight hours.
In contrast, residents along the Coast, North Eastern Kenya, and North Western Kenya should prepare for hot daytime weather, with maximum average temperatures expected to exceed 30°C.
Dry conditions to persist in most areas
Despite the forecast rainfall, the weather agency indicated that large parts of the country are likely to remain generally dry throughout the week.
The latest outlook follows a similar forecast issued last weekend, when the department predicted rainfall across parts of the Highlands, the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin while cautioning that cool, cloudy weather would persist in several regions.
