Heavy rains expected across Kenya with flood and landslide risks

Date:

The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of heavy rainfall across the country from March 19 to 24, raising concerns over potential floods, flash floods, and landslides.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall expected across many parts of the country from March 19 to March 24. This advisory raises concerns over possible floods, flash floods, and landslides, prompting authorities and residents to prepare for potential impacts.

Expected Rainfall and Impact

According to the agency, rainfall is anticipated to exceed 20mm within 24 hours in several regions. The rains are expected to peak between March 20 and March 23 before easing slightly toward the end of the period. This significant weather event is likely to affect various areas, particularly those prone to flooding.

Regions on High Alert

Several regions are on high alert, including:

  • Lake Victoria Basin
  • Rift Valley
  • Central Highlands

Counties such as Kisumu, Kakamega, Nakuru, Kiambu, Nyeri, Meru, and Nairobi are expected to receive substantial rainfall. Additionally, coastal and eastern regions, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Machakos, and Kitui, are also under advisories. Northern counties like Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera may experience rainfall in some areas as well.

Flooding and Landslide Risks

The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned that floodwaters may appear even in areas where rainfall is not heavy, particularly in downstream locations. Residents in these regions have been advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water, as this poses significant risks.

Authorities have also warned against seeking shelter under trees or near metal structures due to the increased risk of lightning during storms. Individuals living near the slopes of the Aberdare Ranges and Mount Kenya should remain vigilant, as heavy rains in these areas could trigger landslides.

Call for Caution and Preparedness

The weather agency has indicated that while the probability of severe weather events is moderate, serious risks remain if safety measures are ignored. Emergency teams have been alerted to monitor the situation closely and respond as necessary.

Residents are urged to stay informed by following official updates and taking precautions during this period. Authorities emphasize that early awareness and preparedness can significantly reduce the impact of the expected heavy rains.

As the forecasted rains approach, communities across Kenya are encouraged to take the necessary steps to ensure their safety and minimize potential disruptions caused by flooding and landslides.
