IEBC warns against claims of planned manipulation of 2027 presidential election

Date:

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has strongly condemned recent claims by political actors alleging that they intend to influence the outcome of the 2027 presidential election through illegal means.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Commission described the remarks as reckless, baseless and dangerous, warning that they risk undermining public confidence in Kenya’s electoral system ahead of the next General Election.

IEBC dismisses claims as reckless and misleading

The electoral agency said it had noted “with grave concern” public utterances by individuals purporting to have the ability to manipulate the 2027 election outcome through extra-legal mechanisms.

According to the Commission, the statements have already generated anxiety within the country’s political environment and could distort public perception regarding the integrity of Kenya’s democratic institutions.

“IEBC considers such utterances to be unacceptable, reckless, and entirely baseless,” the Commission said.

The agency further warned that the claims appear intended to instill fear among Kenyans, mislead the public and erode trust in the electoral process.

IEBC urged Kenyans to ignore the remarks and refrain from spreading messages that could heighten political tensions ahead of the election period.

Electoral Code of Conduct not yet operational

The Commission also clarified the current legal position surrounding election-related conduct and political accountability.

IEBC explained that the Electoral Code of Conduct established under Article 84 of the Constitution and Section 110 of the Elections Act is currently not operational because the country is not yet within the official election period.

The Commission noted that it only acquires jurisdiction to enforce the Code once elections have been formally declared.

This position, IEBC said, was affirmed by the Supreme Court in the case of Hon. Sabina Chege Supreme Court Petition No. 23 (E026) of 2022.

“Notably, the IEBC has not declared any elections. Further, there is no publication of the 2027 General Election that has been made to warrant the current wave of premature and irresponsible utterances,” the statement read.

Commission pledges free and credible 2027 elections

Despite the concerns raised by the recent remarks, IEBC reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of Kenya’s electoral process.

The Commission assured Kenyans and all political stakeholders that it would continue to safeguard its independence, impartiality and constitutional mandate as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue.

“IEBC remains fully dedicated to deliver a 2027 General Election that will be free, fair and credible in accordance with the laws of Kenya and international best practices,” the Commission stated.

The statement comes amid rising political activity and growing public debate over alliances, succession politics and electoral credibility ahead of the 2027 polls.

IEBC has in recent months repeatedly urged political leaders to exercise restraint in public communication and avoid statements that could undermine trust in democratic institutions or incite unnecessary political tension.

The Commission also called on Kenyans to remain vigilant against misinformation and fake news related to the electoral process.
