Justice Lenaola urges responsible journalism ahead of future elections

Date:

Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola has called on journalists to exercise responsible reporting and uphold truth and national cohesion, warning that media narratives will play a critical role in shaping Kenya’s peace ahead of future elections.

Speaking during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2026 at Strathmore University in Nairobi, Lenaola emphasised the powerful influence of the media in a fast-changing information environment increasingly driven by social media and emerging technologies.

“You are the heartbeat of the nation. Every headline, every breaking news alert shapes public perception,” he said.

Rising Threat of Misinformation

The judge cautioned that the widespread use of digital platforms has accelerated the spread of misinformation, with more Kenyans turning to social media as their primary source of news.

“Misinformation spreads just as fast as information, sometimes even faster. The responsibility lies with you to ensure accuracy without inflaming tensions,” Lenaola noted.

He stressed that journalists must remain vigilant, ensuring that the information they disseminate is verified, balanced and does not contribute to public anxiety or division.

Lessons from Kenya’s Electoral Past

Drawing from Kenya’s past electoral experiences, Lenaola underscored the need for peace-sensitive journalism, especially as the country moves closer to another election cycle.

“The national moment must remain one of truth, not fear,” he said, urging the media to present facts in a manner that informs citizens while safeguarding unity.

He noted that responsible reporting could help prevent conflict by promoting understanding and reducing the spread of inflammatory narratives.

Adapting to Technology Responsibly

Lenaola also challenged the media industry to adapt ethically to technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, which is increasingly shaping how news is produced and consumed.

“We must embrace innovation cautiously, ensuring that technology serves truth rather than distorts it,” he said.

Safeguarding Truth and Unity

The judge reiterated that the role of journalists goes beyond reporting events, describing the media as a key pillar in protecting democracy and fostering national cohesion.

He urged media practitioners to remain guided by professionalism, integrity and accountability, particularly in a period where information can easily be manipulated or misinterpreted.
