Kenya, Pakistan push for expanded trade and investment ties after Islamabad talks

Date:

Kenya and Pakistan have moved to strengthen bilateral trade and investment relations after the Second Kenya-Pakistan Joint Trade Committee meeting held in Islamabad.

The discussions, led by Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Ombam, focused on improving market access, enhancing customs cooperation, and promoting stronger business partnerships between the two countries.

Focus on Expanding Bilateral Trade

Trade officials from both countries said the meeting provided an opportunity to reinforce long-standing commercial relations while exploring new areas of economic cooperation.

The two governments reaffirmed their commitment to supporting sustainable economic growth and increasing trade volumes through closer collaboration.

Officials noted that Kenya and Pakistan agreed to strengthen customs coordination, facilitate business-to-business linkages, and encourage participation in trade fairs and investment exhibitions.

Addressing Non-Tariff Trade Barriers

The talks also focused on addressing non-tariff barriers that continue to affect trade flows between Nairobi and Islamabad.

Both countries emphasized the importance of sustained engagement to unlock the full potential of the Kenya-Pakistan trade partnership amid changing global supply chains and increasing international competition.

Trade experts say reducing trade restrictions and improving market access could significantly boost commercial activity in agriculture, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and technology sectors.

Plans to Fast-Track Key Agreements

Kenya and Pakistan further committed to accelerating the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering trade promotion, customs cooperation, investment facilitation, standards and quality assurance, pharmaceuticals, ICT, and tourism.

The agreements are expected to create a stronger framework for long-term economic cooperation between the two countries.

Kenya Eyes Expanded Exports to Pakistan

During the meeting, Kenya expressed interest in increasing exports of tea, coffee, avocados, flowers, leather products, halal-certified goods, dairy products, and other agricultural commodities to Pakistan.

Pakistan, on the other hand, highlighted opportunities for exporting rice, pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, tractors, sports goods, spices, fruits, vegetables, and engineering products to Kenya.

Kenya Diversifying Global Trade Partnerships

The renewed push for stronger economic ties comes as Kenya seeks to diversify export destinations and attract more foreign investment under its broader trade and industrialization agenda.

Pakistan is also looking to expand its economic footprint in Africa through increased trade and manufacturing partnerships.

Kenya has in recent years intensified efforts to strengthen trade relations with Asian markets as part of a strategy to reduce reliance on traditional export destinations in Europe and North America.

Joint Trade Committee to Monitor Progress

Officials said the Joint Trade Committee framework will continue serving as a platform for monitoring implementation of trade agreements and resolving emerging commercial challenges between the two countries.

Both sides expressed optimism that continued engagement would help unlock new economic opportunities and strengthen long-term bilateral cooperation.
