The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has explained why several competitive courses suddenly disappeared from its application portal after reopening the revision window for the September 2026 university intake.
In a statement issued on Saturday, May 16, KUCCPS said programmes such as Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Engineering were automatically removed from the system after all available spaces were filled during the first application phase that closed on May 6.
The placement agency clarified that the portal is designed to stop displaying courses once institutions reach their admission capacity, preventing students from applying for programmes with no remaining vacancies.
High Demand Locks Out Thousands
According to KUCCPS, the affected courses attracted an overwhelming number of applicants compared to the limited slots available in universities and colleges across the country.
“Some degree programmes such as Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Engineering were filled in the first application due to high demand as compared to available spaces in the programmes,” KUCCPS said.
The agency encouraged students who missed out on the highly competitive programmes to consider applying for courses still available during the ongoing revision period.
The clarification followed growing concerns from students who noticed the programmes were missing from the system after the portal reopened. Many questioned whether the courses had been cancelled or suspended.
KMTC Applicants Also Affected
The issue also affected applicants seeking placement into Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) programmes.
Several students complained online after failing to find medical-related courses such as Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing on the application portal.
In response, KUCCPS explained that some KMTC programmes had equally reached full capacity because of high demand and would only return during the next application cycle.
The agency confirmed that courses including Nursing, Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy would become available again in the September intake window.
Revision Window Opened for Seven Days
KUCCPS reopened the application and revision portal on Saturday, May 16, targeting 2025 KCSE candidates who were unsuccessful during the initial placement exercise.
The revision exercise will run for seven days before closing on May 22.
At the same time, KUCCPS announced that successful applicants had already started receiving placement notifications through SMS and the student portal.
The placement body warned students who had already secured courses not to submit fresh applications during the revision exercise.
Pressure on Competitive Courses
The latest developments once again highlight the growing competition for medical and engineering courses in Kenya, with thousands of students chasing limited training opportunities every year.
Health-related programmes continue to dominate student preferences due to increasing demand for healthcare professionals both locally and abroad, while engineering courses remain attractive because of expanding infrastructure and technology sectors.
Education experts have previously raised concerns over the mismatch between student demand and the limited training capacity available in universities and technical institutions.
KUCCPS is expected to continue monitoring applications during the revision period as students seek alternative programmes before the portal closes later this week.
