Motorists in Nairobi are set to face significant traffic disruptions following the temporary closure and regulation of several major roads as the city hosts the African Forward Summit 2026 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
Authorities announced that roads within the Central Business District and key highways leading into the city will experience intermittent closures between May 11 and May 12 to facilitate the movement of delegates, security convoys and summit logistics.
CBD Roads to Face Restrictions
According to traffic advisories issued by authorities, City Hall Way, Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue and Taifa Road will remain restricted, with access mainly reserved for accredited vehicles and official convoys.
Police said the measures are aimed at ensuring public safety and smooth coordination of the high-level summit taking place in Nairobi.
“The National Police Service is working collaboratively with relevant agencies to ensure smooth traffic flow and a successful event,” the statement said.
Major Highways Affected
Several major roads connecting Nairobi to surrounding areas are also expected to experience heavy traffic and temporary stoppages.
Among the roads affected are:
- Thika Road
- Mombasa Road
- Lang’ata Road
- Limuru Road
- Kiambu Road
Traffic officers have been deployed along key junctions and highways to manage vehicle movement and direct motorists to alternative routes.
Motorists Advised to Plan Ahead
Authorities warned that congestion is likely during peak hours as diverted traffic moves through bypasses and alternative corridors.
Motorists have been urged to plan their journeys early, cooperate with police officers and avoid restricted areas during the summit period.
Police also cautioned that strict action will be taken against motorists who violate traffic regulations or attempt to access restricted zones without authorization.
Security Heightened Around Summit Venue
The summit has attracted high-level delegates and international guests, prompting heightened security operations around KICC and surrounding areas.
Traffic management teams are expected to remain on standby throughout the summit to minimize disruptions and maintain order across the city.
