ODM leader Oburu Oginga has criticised the growing culture of money-driven politics in Kenya, warning that the trend is pushing voters to elect leaders based on wealth instead of integrity and service delivery.
Speaking during a meeting of ODM aspirants from the Nyanza region in Kisumu on Monday, Oburu said the increasing influence of money in elections was weakening the quality of leadership in the country.
“It is money that is spoiling the politics of this country. It is money that is making people elect those who do not deserve leadership,” he said.
The Siaya Senator urged politicians to pursue leadership with the intention of serving wananchi rather than enriching themselves through public office.
Politics Should Be About Service
Oburu, who noted that he is currently serving his seventh term in Parliament after previously serving as a councillor in Kisumu, cautioned young politicians against viewing politics as a shortcut to wealth.
“If you want to get into politics to make money, I can assure you, you will regret it. If you get a chance to serve, just serve your people,” he said.
He encouraged aspirants to focus on building trust with voters through development, accountability and grassroots engagement instead of relying on financial influence and handouts during campaigns.
Oburu Calls for Unity Within ODM
The veteran ODM leader also appealed for unity within the Orange Democratic Movement, saying internal divisions could weaken the party ahead of future political contests.
According to Oburu, party members—not officials—would ultimately determine who secures nominations during elections.
“Our party is as strong as you are united. Even those who did not win positions in the recent ODM elections should not worry because members, not officials, will decide during nominations,” he stated.
He urged aspirants to strengthen the party by recruiting more supporters at the grassroots rather than depending on endorsements from party offices.
“If you want more supporters, look for them in the membership, not in the office,” he added.
Growing Competition in ODM
The Kisumu meeting brought together ODM aspirants from across the Nyanza region amid heightened political activity within the party as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Oburu said the high turnout of aspirants reflected growing enthusiasm among party members and renewed commitment to public service within ODM.
