President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Portugal, calling for expanded cooperation across trade, investment and cultural exchange.
Speaking after a meeting at State House, Nairobi, with Paulo Rangel, the President emphasized the importance of the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
“Kenya values its longstanding relations with Portugal since the establishment of diplomatic ties five decades ago,” Ruto said.
Focus on expanding trade and market access
The President noted that Kenya is keen to deepen trade relations with Portugal, particularly by increasing access for Kenyan goods in European markets.
“We are keen to deepen our trade ties with Portugal and expand market access for Kenyan exports, particularly our value-added agricultural products,” he said.
Ruto highlighted the importance of promoting processed and high-value exports as part of Kenya’s broader strategy to grow its economy and create jobs.
Broadening cooperation beyond trade
Beyond trade, the President outlined several areas where Kenya and Portugal can strengthen collaboration.
“Beyond trade, we are exploring ways to expand investment, maritime cooperation, tourism, cultural cooperation, and migration, in line with our shared commitment to deliver tangible benefits for our peoples,” he said.
He noted that such partnerships are critical in unlocking new opportunities and enhancing bilateral relations.
Visa centre to ease travel
Ruto also welcomed Portugal’s move to open a visa centre in Nairobi, describing it as a key step in improving mobility between the two nations.
“We appreciate Portugal for opening a visa centre in Nairobi to facilitate ease of movement for Kenyans travelling to Portugal,” he said.
Commitment to future collaboration
The President reiterated Kenya’s readiness to work closely with Portugal’s leadership to advance mutual interests.
“We reaffirmed our commitment to working closely with the administration of the newly elected President António José Seguro to advance our shared interests,” Ruto said.
Strengthening diplomatic ties
The meeting signals renewed momentum in Kenya–Portugal relations, with both countries seeking to leverage their partnership to drive economic growth and international cooperation.
Ruto maintained that sustained engagement will be key to translating diplomatic goodwill into real benefits for citizens of both nations.
