Tourism in Mombasa is experiencing a notable boost following the arrival of a luxury cruise liner at the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) terminal.
Passengers disembarked from the Azamara Onward cruise ship at KPA’s ultra-modern cruise terminal, marking yet another milestone for the country’s steadily expanding cruise tourism sector.
Luxury vessel brings hundreds of tourists
The Azamara Onward, arriving from Port Victoria, docked with 650 tourists and 309 crew members on board, including four Kenyans.
The vessel is expected to remain at the port for two nights, giving visitors time to explore coastal attractions before proceeding to Zanzibar as part of its East African itinerary.
Tour operators and hospitality players in the region are set to benefit from the influx of high-end tourists seeking cultural, historical, and beach experiences.

Warm reception at Mombasa port
The ship was received by members of the Diaspora Affairs and Migrant Workers Committee, alongside KPA officials led by General Manager in charge of cargo, Dr. Sudi Mwasinago.
Officials welcomed the passengers, highlighting the importance of cruise tourism in driving economic growth and enhancing Kenya’s global tourism profile.
Kenya strengthens position as cruise hub
The arrival of the Azamara Onward underscores Kenya’s growing reputation as a key cruise destination along the East African coastline.
Industry stakeholders attribute this growth to improved port infrastructure, particularly the development of the modern cruise ship terminal in Mombasa, as well as targeted marketing strategies aimed at attracting international cruise operators.
With more vessels expected to dock in the coming months, Kenya is positioning itself as a preferred stopover for global cruise itineraries.
Economic ripple effect on local sector
The arrival of cruise tourists is expected to inject revenue into the local economy, benefiting hotels, tour guides, transport providers, and small-scale traders.
Visitors are likely to tour iconic destinations such as Fort Jesus, explore Old Town, and visit nearby beach destinations, contributing to increased spending in the region.
Sustaining tourism momentum
As global travel rebounds, Kenya’s focus on cruise tourism is proving to be a strategic move in diversifying its tourism offerings.
Authorities remain optimistic that continued investment in infrastructure and partnerships will sustain the sector’s growth, positioning the country as a leading maritime tourism hub in Africa.
