Lichota passenger terminal set to transform Migori into regional trade and tourism hub

Date:

Migori County is set for a major economic transformation through the ongoing construction of the modern Lichota Passenger Terminal, a project expected to enhance regional connectivity, stimulate trade and unlock new investment opportunities.

The facility, being developed by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to modernize transport infrastructure and integrate counties into national, regional and global economic networks.

Once completed, the terminal will replace the existing basic waiting facilities with a modern Class B international-standard passenger terminal capable of handling up to 500,000 passengers annually.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo said modern transport infrastructure remains a critical driver of economic growth and social transformation.

“Infrastructure that connects people also connects dreams. The modernization of Lichota Passenger Terminal is not merely about constructing a building; it is about opening Migori to new possibilities, new markets and new opportunities for its people,” said Dr. Omollo.

Modern Terminal to Support Regional and International Travel

The upgraded facility will feature dedicated domestic and international passenger processing areas, customs and immigration facilities, and enhanced security systems to support direct regional connectivity with neighbouring countries.

The terminal will also be integrated with the expanded two-kilometre runway, allowing the airstrip to accommodate larger commercial aircraft and support increased passenger and cargo traffic.

According to Dr. Omollo, the project aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring that every region benefits from strategic infrastructure investments.

“By strengthening connectivity, we are creating pathways for trade, investment and tourism to flourish. Migori’s strategic location positions it as a gateway for regional integration and economic growth,” he noted.

The introduction of customs and immigration services is expected to reduce travel time, improve efficiency and facilitate smoother movement of people and goods across borders.

Boost for Trade, Investment and Tourism

The modernization project is anticipated to generate significant economic benefits for Migori County and the wider South Nyanza region.

Business leaders and investors are expected to benefit from improved accessibility, while local enterprises will gain access to broader markets through enhanced transport networks.

The facility is also projected to strengthen cross-border trade with neighbouring countries, creating opportunities for farmers, traders and entrepreneurs to expand their businesses.

Dr. Omollo emphasized that improved transport infrastructure plays a central role in attracting investors and unlocking economic potential.

“Investors are drawn to regions that are accessible and connected. Projects such as the Lichota Passenger Terminal send a strong signal that Migori is ready for business and prepared to compete in the modern economy,” he said.

Tourism stakeholders also anticipate increased visitor arrivals as easier air access opens up the region’s cultural, historical and natural attractions.

Strengthening Security and Border Management

As the facility moves toward completion, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is working closely with relevant agencies to support implementation and future operational coordination.

The department’s role includes strengthening security at entry and exit points, supporting border control operations and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of passengers and cargo.

Dr. Omollo said security remains a critical component of modern transport systems and economic development.

“A secure transport environment builds confidence among travellers, investors and businesses. Our role is to ensure that this facility operates safely and efficiently while supporting regional connectivity and economic progress,” he said.

He added that collaboration among government agencies will be essential in ensuring that the terminal meets international standards for security, passenger processing and operational efficiency.

A Catalyst for Regional Growth

The Lichota Passenger Terminal project represents more than an infrastructure upgrade; it symbolizes Migori’s growing role in Kenya’s development agenda.

As construction progresses, expectations continue to rise that the facility will serve as a catalyst for economic growth, employment creation and regional integration.

“Every major infrastructure investment creates a foundation for future prosperity. The Lichota Passenger Terminal will help unlock Migori’s immense potential and connect its people to opportunities across Kenya, East Africa and beyond,” Dr. Omollo said.

With improved air connectivity, modern passenger facilities and enhanced security systems, the project is expected to position Migori as a key transport, trade and tourism hub in the region.
