Kenya Met warns of increased rainfall in Nairobi, Central and Western regions

Date:

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a seven-day weather forecast warning of continued rainfall across several parts of the country from April 14 to April 20.

According to the latest outlook, rain is expected in regions including the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, Coastal areas, Northeastern Kenya, and the Southeastern lowlands.

Counties such as Nandi, Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kisii, Nyamira, Narok, and Bungoma are among those set to experience consistent rainfall throughout the week.

Nairobi and Central Highlands to Receive Heavy Rains

The weatherman has raised concern over increased rainfall intensity in areas east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi.

Other counties expected to receive heavier rainfall include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi.

“Rainfall is expected over several parts of the country with enhanced intensity over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi,” Kenya Met said.

Residents in these regions should expect cloudy mornings followed by afternoon and night showers, occasionally intensifying into thunderstorms.

While rainfall dominates much of the country, temperature variations are also expected.

Daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are likely in the Coastal region, Northeastern Kenya, and the Southeastern lowlands, creating hot and humid conditions.

In contrast, parts of the Central Highlands and areas near Mount Kilimanjaro may experience minimum temperatures below 10°C, especially during early mornings and nights.

No Flood Risk Along River Tana

Despite the expected rains, the Kenya Meteorological Department has assured the public that there is no immediate flood risk along River Tana.

Forecast data indicates that water levels at Garissa are expected to remain below 2.5 metres over the next seven days.

“The stream flow forecast for the next 7 days indicates that the average water level at Garissa is not likely to exceed 2.5m. Therefore, there is no risk of flooding within the forecast period,” the department noted.

Authorities Urge Caution

Local authorities are urging residents, especially in urban areas, to remain cautious during periods of heavy rainfall.

Nairobi County officials have advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid flooded roads and exercise patience during peak rains to reduce the risk of accidents.

Public service vehicle operators have also been urged to prioritise passenger safety, while developers blocking drainage systems have been called upon to clear waterways to prevent flooding.

Outlook for the Week

The forecast signals a continuation of Kenya’s long rains season, with varying intensity across regions.

While the rainfall is expected to support agriculture and water resources, authorities continue to emphasise preparedness and safety, particularly in flood-prone and urban areas.

As the week unfolds, Kenyans are advised to stay updated with daily weather alerts and plan their activities accordingly.
