Leaders call for unity and reconciliation at National Prayer Breakfast ahead of 2027 polls

Date:

Political and religious leaders have called for unity, forgiveness and responsible leadership as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election.

The leaders made the remarks during the 23rd Annual National Prayer Breakfast held at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Thursday, May 28, under the theme “Forgiveness and Reconciliation.”

The event brought together senior government officials, lawmakers, diplomats, clergy and civil society representatives, with President William Ruto among those in attendance.

Kingi Warns Against Divisive Politics

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi urged leaders to promote reconciliation and national healing instead of deepening political and social divisions.

“Time has come for true forgiveness and reconciliation. Let us be leaders committed to healing divisions, restoring trust and rebuilding the moral foundation of our nation,” Kingi said.

He further urged leaders to focus on building the country rather than engaging in destructive politics.

“Let us be remembered for what we built, not what we destroyed,” he added.

Appeal for Restraint Ahead of 2027 Elections

Kingi cautioned politicians against inflammatory rhetoric and identity-based politics as the country gradually enters the next election cycle.

“As we approach the next General Election, this season requires wisdom, maturity and restraint from all of us. We must guard against division, polarization and identity-based mobilisation,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing political realignments and increasing succession debates ahead of the 2027 polls.

National Prayer Breakfast Focuses on Unity

Over the years, the National Prayer Breakfast has evolved into a platform for reflection on governance, leadership, accountability and national cohesion.

The annual event often offers leaders from different political divides an opportunity to temporarily put aside rivalry and promote a message of unity and shared national purpose.

This year’s focus on forgiveness and reconciliation comes at a time when the country continues to face heightened political tension, economic challenges and debates surrounding governance and accountability.

Religious Leaders Call for Ethical Leadership

Religious leaders attending the forum urged politicians to embrace responsible leadership and avoid statements that could fuel divisions within communities.

They also called for issue-based politics and peaceful engagement as the country heads toward another politically charged period.

The gathering concluded with prayers for peace, unity and wisdom among leaders as Kenya prepares for future political contests.
