Ruto begins two-day state visit to Finland to deepen trade and investment ties

Date:

President William Ruto has arrived in Helsinki, Finland, for a two-day State Visit at the invitation of Finnish President Alexander Stubb, as Kenya seeks to strengthen diplomatic, economic and investment ties with the Nordic nation.

The President is accompanied by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi for the visit, which is expected to focus on expanding cooperation in key sectors including technology, innovation, education, clean energy, health and trade.

According to the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, the visit follows President Stubb’s historic State Visit to Kenya in May 2025 and marks another milestone in the growing partnership between the two countries.

“The visit marks an important step in deepening the longstanding and cordial relations between Kenya and Finland and is expected to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, innovation, education, peacebuilding and multilateral diplomacy,” the statement said.

Focus on Trade, Technology and Clean Energy

During his stay in Helsinki, President Ruto is expected to hold bilateral talks with President Stubb aimed at enhancing collaboration in strategic sectors that are critical to Kenya’s development agenda.

The discussions will focus on advancing partnerships in education, digital transformation, technology, environmental sustainability, healthcare, peace and security, while exploring new opportunities for economic cooperation.

Officials say the engagements are expected to pave the way for fresh agreements and partnerships designed to boost trade, attract investment and create employment opportunities for Kenyans.

Business Forum to Attract New Investments

A major highlight of the visit will be the Kenya-Finland Business Forum, which will be hosted at the Nokia Executive Experience Center in Espoo.

The forum will bring together business leaders, investors and government representatives from both countries to explore opportunities in manufacturing, clean energy, technology, innovation and value addition.

The Government hopes the engagements will attract new investments into Kenya, support industrial growth and strengthen the country’s position as a regional economic hub.

Kenya to Participate in Finland’s Premier Security Forum

President Ruto is also scheduled to participate in the Kultaranta Talks, Finland’s leading foreign and security policy forum.

This year’s forum includes Africa as a key pillar of discussion, providing Kenya with an opportunity to articulate the continent’s priorities on peace, security, sustainable development and reforms of global governance institutions.

The discussions are expected to address emerging geopolitical challenges and opportunities for international cooperation in promoting stability and economic growth.

Engagement With Kenyan Diaspora

As part of the visit, President Ruto will also meet members of the Kenyan diaspora community living in Finland.

The engagement seeks to recognize the critical role played by Kenyans abroad through remittances, investments, skills transfer and strengthening people-to-people relations between Kenya and Finland.

Government officials say diaspora contributions remain an important pillar of Kenya’s economic development strategy and foreign relations agenda.

Regional Security and US Relations

The Finland visit comes shortly after President Ruto participated in the Oslo Forum in Norway, where he met Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump on Arab and African Affairs.

The two leaders discussed strengthening Kenya-U.S. relations, expanding trade and investment opportunities, and enhancing cooperation on regional peace and security issues, including the conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

They also explored collaboration in responding to the ongoing Ebola outbreak, reaffirming the importance of international partnerships in addressing emerging public health threats and promoting regional stability.
