Ngong Road–Naivasha road flyover nears completion as Nairobi targets faster mobility ahead of AFCON 2027

Date:

The construction of the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road (Junction Mall) Flyover is in its final stages, with the government projecting the project will significantly ease traffic congestion and improve movement across one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo said the flyover represents a major milestone in transforming Nairobi into a modern and globally competitive capital city.

“The construction of the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover marks another major step in redefining Nairobi’s infrastructural capacity as a modern and globally competitive Capital City,” said Dr Omollo.

The project is being implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and is expected to improve connectivity to key economic zones and sporting facilities, including the Talanta Stadium ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Key Features of the Flyover

According to Dr Omollo, the project features an 800-metre elevated dual carriageway with a 254-metre steel bridge section designed to separate through-traffic from local traffic around the busy Junction Mall intersection.

“The project features an 800-metre elevated dual carriageway incorporating a 254-metre steel bridge section, with four traffic lanes designed to separate through-traffic from local access around the Junction Mall intersection,” he said.

He noted that the steel superstructure and the primary structural framework have already been completed.

“The steel superstructure and primary structural framework are complete, with works now progressing to deck slab installation, asphalt surfacing, line marking and the mounting of high-mast LED luminaires and ancillary lighting infrastructure,” Dr Omollo stated.

Pedestrian Walkways and Cycling Lanes Included

The project also incorporates non-motorised transport infrastructure aimed at improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.

“The flyover also incorporates pedestrian walkways, where street furniture, including resting benches, will be installed, alongside cycling lanes and upgraded stormwater drainage systems to mitigate flooding,” he said.

Travel Time to Reduce to 25 Minutes

The government says the flyover is expected to drastically cut travel time between Ngong Town and Nairobi’s Central Business District.

“Upon completion, the project is expected to drastically reduce travel time from Ngong Town to Nairobi’s Central Business District from nearly two hours to approximately 25 minutes,” Dr Omollo said.

He added that the project is expected to boost productivity, improve movement of goods and people and support Nairobi’s growing metropolitan economy.

Government Supporting Safety and Traffic Coordination

Dr Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting the project through traffic coordination and public safety measures during the final construction phase and after completion.

“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to support the project through coordination on traffic management, public safety sensitization and enforcement of road safety measures,” he said.

He added that the measures are aimed at ensuring safe use of the corridor by motorists, pedestrians and non-motorised transport users.
